A quick search didn't show anything to disable Vanos. There are a few other things that changed along with Vanos being added. DBW throttle, water cooled alternator. I would look for a pre-vanos motor or M60.

Is this the first time you've had the lower pan off the motor? Did your oil pressure light not come on?
I found a site that sells Vanos delete kits but none for M62 motors.. actually whats also sad aside from this failure is the fact there are not much options for us for performance... hell even rebuilding is a costly thing...acid etched cylinder walls.. or iron sleeves...all cost a damn fortune and close to M5 5.0L territory..

trying to find the best option to go... money, motor availability and performance.. and especially reliability. I think VAC is the only one that do work on these engines.. https://store.vacmotorsports.com/vac...nes-p1448.aspx

m6x's are a dime a dozen, just grab another. There's 3 pick n' pulls within 1 hour of me, all of them have at least 2-3 m6x's every time I go. They charge $125 for any engine. 99% of m6x's don't fail mechanically like yours did, if the guides are done. Replace the guides, feed them oil, and they run forever. I'm running a random junk 200k+ mile m62 block with warped 160k+ mile m60 heads. I regasketed it, put guides on it, and compression is dead even across all 8. I have 25k miles on it in my e30, and literally beat the shit out of it every day on my 100 mile commute. Full throttle, 7k rpm's, no mercy. And that's with the nearly 11:1 compression of the m60b44 combo, running an m60 tune. There's also a lot of turbo m6x guys running 10+ psi, 600+whp on stock, unopened engines. They're strong.

IMO, it's not worth building the engine. You'll have $10k+ into a build and barely make s62 power. Sleeving I can see, if you want to go to big boost.

Bentley used a boosted twin screw stock version of the m60 and had no issue. There built for boost and detuned for road use.

Yes the short block will swap.
Front covers and heads will need to be swapped.

VANOS and drive by wire throttle are two of the problems with it in my book. I guess maybe if you're swapping in a factory DME with the appropriate EWS and ring antenna it could be ok... What a pain that would be though. Haha

What was your approach to running the TU in your e30?
