    1985 325e speedo-odometer fix?

So I read all about the gears and as well a few other issues these can have. Mine actually has new gears in it (previous owner must have tried to fix it this way), but unfortunately it still is not working. I took it apart and reflowed solder on anything that looked potentially problematic yesterday, and today I got excited... literally for a tenth of a mile. Then it stopped working again. Speedometer actually works fine. Just no odometer. I was planning to buy a new odometer if my experiment yesterday did not do anything, but with this little tease I want to try to fix it now.

Does anyone have any thoughts? Is there a way to apply voltage (what voltage I guess is my question) while it is out of the car and see if the little motor will work?
Maybe it is getting bound up?

Can't you turn the shaft with the smallest gear by hand and check that other gears rotate?

I guess the speedometer needs this signal

I would make sure the speed sending unit on the diff is connected well. Does your instrument cluster have a coding chip in the front or does it have the black coding chip in the back?

They do rotate when I have it apart- I played around with that a good bit to make sure the gears were not slipping or anything.
I’m due to change oil so I’ll check the rear diff plug then.
I think I have the coding chip on the back. I didn’t know what it was at first so I googled it.

I believe the coding plug is just for the tach. Depending on which speedo you have the gears are different. The moto has a tiny plastic retainer that keeps the gears from moving on their shaft so they stay engaged.

Would you happen to have any more info or a pic of the retaining clip? I think my actual speedo gauge is a motometer replacement.

It's not actually a clip but rather a plastic ring that slips on to the gear shaft. I don't have a pic handy but if you go to odometergears or garagistic you should find a diy for moto

The coding plug in the back let's me know the age of the instrument cluster. I have swapped speedometers between the older and newer units without any issue. Do you have another speedo unit you can swap in to test with? If not, I have an older cluster unit with a good working speedo. $20 and it's yours.

Sorry for the late reply- I wanted to do one last test on my speedometer before replacing. I read here (https://www.r3vlimited.com/board/for...erything-works) that the panel that holds the gears on could be too tight. I loosened it slightly and still nothing.

I’m definitely interested in the part you have. It would be great to get this thing working.
I determined that my cluster is Motometer and the speedometer itself is VDO, if that matters. Here is a photo of the cluster rear.

That is an older unit. I have put the odometer from an old unit into an newer one and vice versa, it works. I have also mixed up motometer and VDO, with no issues. I vaguely remember something about matching tachs to the new/old style, but speedometers did not matter.
