Power steering rack airbag vs non airbag

My airbag car’s steering rack is bad. Leaks and tons of play over bumps. I want to replace and keep it original. Do all e30 racks work or do i have to replace with one made for an airbag car?

    thanks

regular e30 rack should work. pretty sure they all the same 86 up. the modification comes into play if you upgrade to the shorter e36 or z3 rack.

there are coupler upgrades available, usually it's the disk that degrades. it can be replaced separate or you can get derlin replacements. the entire coupler itself should still be available new. there are also direct coupler upgrades, can be used with either the short rack upgrade or stock.

I would definitely use this as an opportunity to upgrade the whole system to something more modern. The E30 rack is super slow ...

The airbag version of the steering coupler (#2 on the diagram, part number 32311156348) has been NLA since 2017. Assuming the U Joints are still good, the flex disk or guibo can be replaced after drilling out the rivets and replacing with bolts, nuts and washers as shown on OEM.com parts diagram:
