You dont need it unless you live in a really cold inviroment, BMW put these on to stop the throttle body from freezing up. Ive taken mines off not much point to it when you live in the UK.
When you take it apart you will see what im talking about, you can even use on of the old Rubber pipes from the sandwich heater to by pass it straight into the Head.
it serves as a throttle body spacer. Very common aftermarket addition on GM vortec engines, and OE on your BMW engine. Apparently it helps to smooth the airflow and the slight increase in volume also aids in drivability slightly during transient operations.
It also gets warm to keep the throttle from sticking. However, the throttle bodi itself also has a heater connection.
on the M20/M40 yes but on the M42 the throttle body has no built in heater. I have not noticed any reduction in performance by the removal of this Spacer.
