brake lining light on???

my brake lining light is on in my 89 325i and i dont have an onwers manual..what does it mean?

It probably means that it is time for new pads and rotors.

I always get new sensors (2) whenever I change the pads.

Why would you do that?
The sensors are cheap, might as well replace them when you have the brakes apart.

I took out the light. I keep check on my brakes as it is. Plus, It's free. :up:

your pads need to be replace or you have a loose connection between harness and sensor

do an inspection of all brake pads look for uneven where or low worn out pads
then check your brake pad sensor

and rotors...

then while your in there do tms drilled rotors on all corner, hp plus pads, ss lines and get a manual

My brake lining light is on too, so I know I need atleast pads.

Do I need to get new rotors? I'd rather not buy something if it's not something totally necessary. How do I check them to make sure they are ok?

The rotors need to be replaced when they are worn close to or below the wear limit documented in the Bentley or TIS. Allowable wear is 2mm, or one 1mm per side. A simple check is to compare the ridge at the edge of the rotor with the thickness of a worn dime, which is close to 1mm.

+1, It is suppose to mean the brake pads are worn down and needs inspection and or replacement. Check the pad thickness, inspect the pad sensor wire for wear through, measure the disc thickess with a micrometer and compare the measurements against the service manual allowable spec limit. Sometimes the rotors can be turned/machined to straighten and reused. The sensor wire circuits are also known to have a bad connection (open circuit) leading to the service light turning on periodically.
