    Which oil filter to get?

I'm stuck between getting the Purolator PureOne or the Mobil 1. I have a Mahle on there right now, but I want something with a synthetic filter to get much finer particles. I just put a PureOne on my stepdad's car and a Mobil 1 on my mom's car yesterday but I really can't decide which one I want for my car. The PureOne supposedly has a finer filter, but it is packed very densely. The Mobil 1 seems of pretty quality construction and feels significantly heavier, for what it's worth. The Royal Purple and K&N filters are available here too, but they are identical to the Mobil 1 and cost more. These are also the only filters with synthetic media that are available around here. Does anyone have any suggestions on which is best?

This site has a lot of good info, but I can't decide from there which is best:

Use the OE filter (Mann or Mahle). A filter with finer pores is more likely to plug up. Since the filter is in-line with the oil pump, if it plugs you'll loose oil pressure. That is really bad for the engine. A better approach than a finer filter is more frequent oil/filter changes.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

If you're not going to go with OEM (which you don't have to), the Purolator is the best one.

I've run Purolators almost the whole time I've owned E30's, always been happy with them.

my wife saw my stack of filters and said she needs a mann filter.
i said its already done, been filtered down to just me. :p

that sounds like a bad joke, but we are that strange that this conversation actually took place.

its awesome that her jetta uses the same filter. Mann all the way.

I actually installed a Mahle on there yesterday. My engine is very dirty and I changed the oil, added seafoam, and a quart of ATF. I plan to replace it all tomorrow night. The filter I would put on there would be a lot larger than the OE specified size and besides, they all have bypass valves incase the filter does get completely clogged. I'm adding Mobil 1 15W-50 and I want it to last a while before the next oil change and my best bet is to get a good filter that can filter out debris better than the OE paper filters. My M20 just hit the 100k mark and I want it to last.

To the best of my knowledge an M20 does not have an oil filter bypass valve. I have seen several cases where a generic filter collapsed and caused very low oil pressure that was instantly fixed by changing to the OE filter.

No, there are better filters out there. Paper isn't going to filter out the finer particles either the Mobil 1 or the Purolator PureOne can.

The oil filters have the bypass built into them. I know the OEM filter is very high quality; I just put the Mahle on my car yesterday. I'm also not talking about putting a Fram on there. The two units I am looking at are pretty high quality themselves.

Alright. I'm just going to flip a coin when I go to Pepboys.

Mahle is OEM... Been using them since these nasty old machines were new.

The Mobil 1 was was $12.99 and the Purolator PureOne was $5.38. I bought the Mobil 1 because it just looks and feels more solid. The Purolator just feels cheaper than the OE filter. The Mobil 1 is definitely on par or better than Mahle with quality, but filters way better than the Mahle possibly could.

So you buy a filter made in Mexico?

There are times that a filter can fitler too much. Then it gets plugged and bad things happen. I use Purolator on my e30 and AC Delco on my other cars/trucks and or Frams high performace filter (not the normal Fram)
