I am installing a new clutch and short shifter in my 85 318i, and I cannot even get the damn transmission out. Do I need to take out the differential or what? I took out every bolt there, but the flex disk is still holding it all up. I need to get the drive shaft out, but I don't know how. Help me soon, the sun is gone.

I'm kind of confused. Did you take the flex disc bolts out? If so, unbolt the center support bearing and then fold the driveshaft down, it will pull the flex disc and driveshaft off the tranny, and then you will be able to remove the tranny. -
I'm going to go mess with it again. I did unbolt all of that, but isn't the drive shaft going through the tranny? I can't move the drive shaft down.Comment

After removing the flex disc bolts, there is something else holding the driveshaft. The transmission flange has a centering pin that is about 1" long. The driveshaft has a hole in the end of it that fits over the pin. You must pull the driveshaft back to clear the pin. Remove the exhaust and the aluminum shield/brace under the tunnel. Then you can unbolt the driveshaft center bearing and drop the center part of the driveshaft. Loosen the sleeve clamp on the center joint of the driveshaft and slide it all the way together. That wiil allow the front of the driveshaft to clear the centering pin. It's best to go ahead and remove the whole driveshaft by removing the four nuts holding it to the differential.
Go buy a Bentley and see the light.
There is no reason to do jobs like this in the dark.John

A super-long strait expension will do the job too, so long as you have the tranny as far down as possible (handing onto engine with a jack under the back of it). Also try loosening the collar nut in the middle the driveshaft, that gives you over an inch of play.Comment
