The key wont turn to 2?

i have the original key thats 20 years old, so its pretty worn, but it is still able to lock and unlock the doors. i put it in the ignition this morning and it will go from position 0 to 1, but then it wont turn to 2. i also tried pulling the key out, rotating 180 degrees and putting it back in. any ideas of what to do now?

i want to get a new one cut, but it does turn smoothly from 0 to 1, then feels like it's hitting a wall when i try to turn it to 2. does that sound like something in the lock? i had a spring pop out in my buick, but when that happened the thing wouldnt turn at all.

Since the key will operate the cylinder past the locked position, I'd say that there is a problem with the ignition lock rather than the key.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

x2 You could try a new key, but my head says ignition cylinder.

Try wiggling the key up and down while turning. When keys get too worn, they don't push the pins far enough in. By wiggling and turning, it bumps them into place.

Also, if you are using the stock key, its is made of steel, and just destroys lock tumblers etc. I always get a brass key made and use it for daily use. I also never unlock my cars from the door as this is typically the most worn lock from all prev owners.

Keyless entry, but for a car that doesnt have that yet, ala jedi trunk lock.

ok, to the dealership guy told me to take to covers off the steering column and see if its the starter or the lock mechanism that is the problem. i couldnt get the top cover off, but i was able to unplug the orange plug (#3) and can start the car with a screw driver now. so the good news is i can get the windows up, but i still cant get to the top cover off to really get to the steering lock (#4) to try to fix/replace it.
