Rob took his car to the dyno, but the results didn't look really impressive. I think that could be for many reasons, one of them being that the dyno will never show the improvement at part thottle, an that's where much of my improvements are. The dyno showed about 5 hp improvement over stock at WOT.
I have not heard any more from Rob. The last email I got from him was on Dec 16, and he didn't respond to the Dec 21 email I sent him.

Someone else in Apex, NC has installed the chip last week but not driven it much because of the bad weather. He did say it was an amazing diffence over the chip he bought of ebay.

Here is a quick email he sent me on Jan 21:

      -----------------------------

      Hi Mark,
I finally got your chip installed in my 318is last evening. I've only put
about 25 miles on it so far, but initial impressions are WOW! I'll let it
settle in a bit, and let the weather clear a little here, then give it some
good real-world testing. It is MUCH better than stock, and noticeably
smoother and more useable than the ProFormance chip it replaced. Details to
      follow...

      Thanks!

      ------------------------------------

      Here's what I received today:

      Hey Mark,
I apologize, but it's really been crappy weather down here (snow, sleet, ice). I've only got about 75 miles on the car since putting in the chip, but I can say that it pulls like a banshee with that thing in there. It is very smooth, and loves it in the 4200+ rev range. I have found myself cruising around in 3rd at highway speeds, just to kick it! Of course mileage will suffer...

We should have fair weather this week, and the roads will be clear enough to let it go a little (and not worry about sliding off due to the excess sand/salt our DOT has applied...) I promise a full report ASAP. Thanks again so much!

Oh, and I expect to give it a thorough workout this July at my first driver's school...heh heh heh.

      -------------------------------------

So that's a real world experience. I'll have to dyno one myself in the spring)

I'll have to look for those posts, I have not seen them (If you are referring to the 1991 318iS chip)

Someone did post about the 1995 318iS chip he bought from me.

Just found some feedback from Stratoayu (he's also a member here)

i've been cut back my internet/forum time substantially for various reasons. family stuff mostly.
Like Mark said, the graphs were less than impressive, but I think a ~7% gain in whp is a noticable achievement on a small, simple motor. And again, the real effects of the chip are the ones the dyno doesnt show, like squeezing off at 3500rpms in 5th gear and actually going faster....

The chips in my car, my dads, and Sykos are all performing fine, no problems whatsoever. Not really much else I can say that I haven't already....

I still havent done the 92 octane test, I'll get around to it at some point

btw- it was 7whp wasnt it mark? I know honda guys that spend $1500 for a 7% improvement :D

I can't remember whatthe exact improvement was, but everyone who has it is very happy with the results. Can you send me the charts?

I find the 7% figure interesting.

I mean, 7% is ~10rwhp on an M20B25, i.e. exactly what JimC claims as the peak gain with his M20 chip. If that's the case, the results are that much more impressive. The world thought M42's didn't have anything to gain from programming changes.

                sounds good.

It would be cool to see some dyno comparison & ass dyno comparison between this chip and the Tuner Chip.

Anyways, will there be a group buy for this still?

I'd be happy to run the group buy if everyone is interested. I think all of you would be quite satisfied with it's performance.

I do think that DYNO chart do not tell the whole truth. No one drives a road car WOT all day long. Part throttle improvements are better n more practical for daily use.

Like they say HP is part of the equation.
I'd like to quote "Horsepower sells car but torque wins races"

BTW, MarkD, you mentioned u have the 95 318is chip. I assume it's still for the M42 instead of the M44... I wrote to you before on it 1 year ago as I'm using the M42 from a 95 E36 318ti.

Horsepower is directly related to torque and rpm, so its really a bit more comlex that that.

                      Yes it is for the M42 with DME 0 261 203 282, or 0 261 203 357.

What octane do you have? It has to be 95 RON or higher to take advantadge of these chips.

sooo, lets get a group buy going.

MarkD, what kinda price are you going to be able to give us R3V members? I'm sure we can get quite a few guys interested in this.

Well i was a M42 guy that was excited before reading the reviews. I llive in California, and i could only pump 91 octane. The 91 octance chip didn't seem to get a very "WOW" effect, so i'm still figuring out if it's worth the 200 dollars. If i had 93 octane i would jump on this GB immediately. My initial impression from the review for the 91 octance chip is not that impressive so thats why i'm buying one immediately. I'll probably get one eventually but it seems like theres better use of my money for now.
