Mark sent me 2 chips to try, one more aggressive than the other. Preface: 91 318is with 90k miles, stock motor save for K&N drop in filter and thrush muffler. I had a JC chip but sold it afte about 2 weeks due to not really feeling any butt dyno gains whatsoever.
I started with the 'milder' chip, drove it around for a day to let the ECU learn the chip as per Marks advice. The car felt a little better, throttle response improved across the rev range and the top end (7100rpm redline) felt good. The extra RPMs were really nice, being able to hold 2nd and 3rd gear coming out of sweepers was great, much better than banging off the revlimiter or potentially upsetting the cars balance shifting.
Got home and put in the 'aggressive' chip, made a ~120 mile road trip to ensure ECU 'learning'. Today, the car felt great. I was really suprised how much of a difference I felt compared the JC chip, and the 1st MarkD chip as well. Throttle response was even better, the car revs noticably faster. The best gains are in the mid to top range, with a good boost in acceleration in the 3500+ range. Top end is great as well, with the 7180 (think) rev limit. The chip definitely gave the motor a needed shot in the arm. Its not a turbo of course, however, I'm pretty critical (hence i sold the JC chip), and the MarkD chip indubitably feels better than stock.
Idle is like stock, mileage around town was down since I was driving the shit out of it. Highway mpg was unchanged...
I'll be heading down to my dyno shop as soon as they have an opening to see what this really does. I wont make any estimates on actual hp gain until then.
