I plan on doing this over christmas break and was wondering what else I should replace while I'm in there. I already have new tranny mounts, muffler brackets... bolts?

It was a bit of a pain when I took mine out. Of course I didn't have air tools 8)
You will most likely need an impact gun to get those bastards off. Also, if you have the harmonic balancer, it make it even more fun :shock:

I replaced the center bearing, all the shifter bushings, the shift lever ( Z3 1.9 lever) & the selector shaft seal in the transmission at the same time as the guibo.
If for some reason you haven't bought a Bently manual yet, look this over:

Are you sure about that? 15 minutes? I had to drop the entire exhaust (it's rusted into one piece), remove a heat shield and cross brace & drop the center bearing to get the guibo off. There is a pin in the center of the guibo between the transmission output and the driveshaft. Dropping the center bearling and bending the driveshaft at the universal joint allows you to pull the driveshaft back off the pin. Maybe you are missing that pin? i found out today, that the book time on a guibo is 3 hours, and at least my shop will give free labor on the center support bearing while the guibo is done, they just pay for the part. and if book time is 3 hours, it gets done in an hour and a half or less 8)Dan

Wow. You did *exactly* what I'm going to be doing in the coming month. Timing belt done, now time to move on to the tranny. Replacing the exhuast, too, and maybe doing a rebuild kit for the slave cylinder, too, 'cuz it's leaking as well.

2 hints:
1) To get the selector seal out of the transmission, push the selector shaft as far as it goes into the transmission (4th gear). That way you will have more clearance to pry out the seal.
2) My center bearing was a press fit onto the driveshaft. To get it off, I used a puller with very long arms. To get the new bearing on, I put the bearing in the oven at the minimum temperature (about 150 degrees) for about 10 minutes to expand the metal. Then, I shoved it onto the driveshaft as hard and fast as I could with my hands. It slipped easily into place, then immediatly contracted and locked into place on the driveshaft.

Think what they're refering to is a metal shroud (of sorts) that surrounds the guibo on some cars. It gets sandwiched between the guibo and output shaft flange on the tranny. Makes getting the bolts out a real PITA since you can't get a wrench on it to keep it from turning... Which is why I paid somebody to replace my blown up transmission - I couldn't get the car up high enough to get the driveshaft out - because of the guibo bolts. I made sure that little sumbitch made it into the 'leftover parts' pile along with my rusted out exhaust. That thing is pure EVIL...anyone know about the harmonic balancer?Comment
