estimated time to do a timing belt/waterpump

anyone got an estimate on the time to do the job.. i will be doing it in a friends shop but just wanted to get an estimate of how much time i need... im pretty mechanically inclined and he will be there to lend a hand if needed..

last time i did a timing belt was on my corrado but that is just about the easiest timing belt to swap out that you can imagine...

anything i should look out for

doing timing belt, cap and rotor, water pump, and tensioner

4-6hrs if you don't know exactly what you're doing.

first time i ever worked on an E30 and it took me about 4 hours to do this
timing belt / tenisoner, all new belts and thermostat..
if you've got lots of time take the rad off and hood, makes things much easier and plus give you a chance to flush the entire cooling system out and put all new fluid in..

helpful writes on there on just about everything E30

haha, I was going to say 2 hours at the most if you know what you're doing.

it's not hard at all, it seems intimidating but there's really not much to it, just follow the steps in the Bentley and you'll be fine. One of the reasons I love working on E30s is because most things are pretty intuitive to take apart and reassemble. BTW, might be a good time to replace your hoses if they're really old, and your belts too (since the coolant is drained and you have to take the belts off anyway..)

general rule of thumb is about 60k or 4 years for an e30 (or so i have heard)

If you drive like a grandma. I wouldn't go over 40k on a t-belt the way most of us drive.

Chapel took 13hours to do it his first time
