can't seem to fix tach

    I am on my third cluster. After awhile , now, with this one, the tach works every time I spack it hard.
    My suggestion. Buy a solid state board. Fuck batteries. Make sure your system works with one of these. Either buy a new cluster or resolder the tach from yours. There are write ups here.You can mix and match with another cluster. Easier in my opinion.- Steve

      replacement ECU didn't fix it, safe to say it's probably a wiring thing at this point?

      anyone know which pins on the tach connector (the blue plug i believe?) i should check connections to? or maybe just reseat all the connections in the pigtail that plugs into the back of the cluster?

        well i got to looking...no blown fuses... and seemingly everything else on the cluster works except those tach/mpg. I guess I'll have to try a DME?

        I'm not sure what else to try...if everything else works the SI batteries should be good right?

        edit: if i do get a dme where would i locate it? :-D

          hey man, i have heard to take out cluster, remove tach, and resolder all the pins from the blue connector onto the board. only reason i didn't do this was because i had a complete, working cluster on hand.

          i would suggest if you're already tearing apart your cluster you might as well swap out the SI batteries since it's only a matter of time before they lunch.

          look in FS for DME's, depending on which engine you've got you'll need a specific one. i see them come up fairly often.

            I saw a DME i could pick up pretty cheap, but would rather check everything i have on hand first... i'll have to find a guide on removing the cluster. i got all screws out, but cant get it out over the steering column.... any tips?

            location of DME in the car is where i was asking on that..

              i have an airbag car, but i disabled SRS and have a different steering wheel on. i put a terrycloth down on the top of the steering wheel column and using the two mounting arms on the top of the cluster i pulled it out/down so that the face was resting on the terrycloth/steering column, then i just guided it out the right side where the wiper stalk is. i met some resistance removing it that way, but nothing too bad, and didn't have to take off my steering wheel.

              as for DME, sorry man i totally read too fast. it's above the glovebox, behind that black plastic trim bit. open glovebox, you should see 4 screws on the front face of the dash (hidden when the glovebox is closed), only remove the two outside ones, and then you'll see two of the plastic retainer clips that hold the back of the trim in. 90 degree turn, pull out. DME is there.

                thanks for the info! I'll give it a try when I get some free time...has anyone cut out the actual speedo/tach and mounted in Autometer versions in a manner to keep all warning lights and such? Not sure its possible, but would be cool!

                  I have a RacePak IQ3 sunk into a partial cluster with the warning lights working. Fairly radical surgery to the main PCB of the cluster was required to accomplish this. If one were to want to replace the cluster with non-OE tach and gages I think the job would be a lot worse and would require replacement of at least the fuel level and temp sensors with something compatible with available gages. I.E., not a trivial task.

                      ok back from the dead...ok, si lights come on, all soldering points look great... anyone know the pin out to check and see if there is signal coming in? I guess it's likely a DME huh?

                              is the wiring to/from the dme jacked?

                              when i did my engine swap, i forgot rehook this wire back up and my tach didnt work.
