power steering belt question on M42

I'm replacing the powersteering belt on my friends E30 318 with the M42, and I can't move the flippin power steering pump to get the belt on!! I tried moving the bolt with the little teeth on it, and it didn't budge. I took the bolt of and it still didn't move. What should I do?

if your talking about the adjustable pulley yes it does move its probably just stuck from over time spray ir with some liquid wrench or wd40 or somthing and let her sit for awhile and then it should move.

only if you want to destroy the bracket..

you're not supposed to remove any bolts. there is a nut that you have to loosen, and then there is an adjusting nut with teeth on it that you use to move the pump. be careful with it because the teeth strip really easy!

Yeah, the nut with the teeth on it must be stripped. I tried moving it and it didn't move. I tried prying it with a prybar, but it still didn't move. Also it was against the plastic intake tube so I didn't want to do it too hard.

loosen the other bolt on the pump to allow it to move, then try to turn the adjusting nut.

Loosen the bolts that are on the one with the teeth, the closest one to the teeth on the pump and the when furthest to the right fom that one. Then use a pry bar under or over the bolt(depending if you want to loosen or tighten the belt) on the pump closest to the one with the teeth. I just did this a couple of days ago to replace my alternator and fan bolt.

Who needs that tricky power steering stuff? I did the same. But I'm going to guess that you will find this to be an easier method to change the belt with.

I still haven't had a chance to finish the car, but I'm thinking I'm going to loosen some of the bolts that connect the pump onto the car. Hopefully I can get it to move. The car isn't mine, it's actually driven by a 17 year old girl that doesn't know jack about cars.

                      Thanks for the reccomendations guys.
