More m42 engine noise *NOW WITH VIDEO*

well i just replaced the timing chain tensioner and it fixed the noise but now there is another. It starts at 3k and i think it stops around 4k. It sounds kind of raspy like a race exhaust. I checked the oil right after i turned it off and it was at like 1/3 full mark. then i let it sit and its a little above the half mark. Im using like 5w30 or 40. What oil should i be using? Lately it has been 60-70 adn it hardly ever gets below 40 here. Could any of that be causing the noise? did i wait to long to replace the tensioner?

    here is a video

could be an exhaust leak? or a little bit of lifter noise, they do have some lifter noise.

Your door chime works pretty well.

Why not get the video from the engine bay?

im using regular 5w30 oil but im thinking of switching to 10w30 synthetic. I might bust out the real camera to get some better audio. You should be able to hear some extra noise around 3k and it only does it when the engine is warm.

I also have that problem. I've posted many times about this problem but i've never gotten an real answer. My noise starts at around 3000rpm also and just gets louder, but really emphasized around 3-4000rpm. I really don tknow what the problem is, it seems like it's coming from the catalytic converter, but then when your under the car it seems to start near the end of the header. THis noise drives me insane, and sometimes i really wanna sell the damn thing b/c of the raspy exhaust sound. It's not a nice raspy, just really annoying. :x . Please someone chime in now.

O yeah, i also tried 20w50 and 10w40 and 10w30 and theres no difference. Noise is still there. I also have a new chain, all new spockets, new tensioner, all new guide rails.

I have not replace the exhaust gasket yet, but that will be my next task since thats the only thing i could think of left to change. I also got a PM from kowalski letting me know that he thinks it's most likely the gasket between the header and the exhaust. Now my question is, if it is the exhaust gasket shouldn't you feel exhaust fumes blowing out of the gasket area?

thats possible but maybe not. How loud is yours? Mine cant be heard much in 4th or 5th but in teh lower gears expecially 1st its pretty easy to hear. It kind of also sounds like metal grinding? The thing that puzzles me is that i havent really heard it when the engine was cold only warm, is yours the same?

Mine could only be heard in 1st 2nd and less at 3rd. Also mine sometimes goes away on a very cold morning, but not every cold morning, just some. So it sounds like we both have the same problem. Please let me know when you fix this problem, b/c i hate this sound with a passion from day one of owning this car. I thought it was a easy fix when i brought it, but i guess not.
