When I cleaned off my valve cover - I used simple green and a soft wire brush on a drill. (got to be careful with the wire brush app - it can and will remove aluminum.. )1987 m6 and 1989 325iComment

Simple green is about as useful as water.
Use gasoline.Tenured Automotive Service Professional - Avid BMW Enthusiast

I used water too - (and have had wonderful results using simple green for engine cleaning; it's one hell of a de-greaser)
Gasoline is volatile; carcinogenic and corrosive -
If anyone uses gasoline - Wear thick rubber gloves - and a gas mask.1987 m6 and 1989 325iComment

Volatile? Yes... but so are most good solvents.Originally posted by jcsomersetGasoline is volatile; carcinogenic and corrosive
Carcinogenic? Sure, but who cares?
Corrosive? Not in any of my experiences.
I wear jeans, tshirt, and skin. Gloves are for pussies. Why would you use a gas mask?Originally posted by jcsomersetIf anyone uses gasoline - Wear thick rubber gloves - and a gas mask.

True, I've used gas to clean paint of my hands and arms, just wash it off afterwards, it's not like you soak yourself or the engine in it.
Corrosive!? If it was corrosive you wouldn't have a gas tank much less a fuel system or and engine.Gasoline is volatile; carcinogenic and corrosiveComment

It's corrosive to your skin. Try not washing it off for a while. see what happens.Originally posted by boom-monkeyTrue, I've used gas to clean paint of my hands and arms, just wash it off afterwards, it's not like you soak yourself or the engine in it.

It was neither designed nor should be used as a cleansing agent.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Castrol SuperClean. Pretty potent stuff....its been able to remove a number of oily/greasy/stubborn residue messes from my undercarriage and engine compartment. For cosmoline it may require some scrubbing effort (Dave Adams' had success with it on his cabrio by using a plastic bristle brush). Haven't attempted cosmoline removal in my car yet. Its got some.....not much though. When using the SuperClean make sure you have some ventilation going of some kind. That stuff is strong.
If all else fails, Jordon's gasoline suggestion should work too.

I've always found gasoline to be very effective on grease. I had a 2 stroke bike that used to leak oil like a mother. Then dirt would stick to the oil.... you get the idea. Gas has always worked.
I've also heard of using diesel, but never tried it. Stinks too much for me.

if you dont wash your hands after using gasoline for such things your hands will dry out... and your skin will crack.... (over time) it doesnt feel good.... normal latex gloves will not protect from gasoline.... you need to blue nitrile gloves....
but yah.... i always wear gloves, i cut and file my fingernails... i even trim my cuticles.... gloves make cleaning up after work soo much easierComment
