People bend the selector rod in order to clear the harmonic balancer on the driveshaft. The 318is doesn't have that so the Z4 3.0 lever will fit fine with no bending.

You don't know the difference? Did you look at the pictures of the levers? The Z4 3.0 lever has a MUCH shorter throw than the Z3 1.9 lever, which of course means it can apply much less torque to the selector rod.Originally posted by E30_boyI just read that whole thing, everyone is going back and fourth about the Z3 and Z4 I still dont know what the differance is :?
If you're going to be racing and whatnot, I'd probably get the Z3 1.9 lever because it'll allow for easier throws (and possibly quicker) at high rpm levels. I have the Z4 3.0 lever and it's great for normal driving, no difficulty at all. However, I've found when down shifting at high loads it's rather difficult (this is perhaps due to my worn synchros in 2nd gear though).Originally posted by Grueliusand i do not know what bugg brakes are.Comment

No one shifter is "good" to all audiences
Its a matter of personal preference.
I like the z3 1.9, I had it in a m20 and have it in my m42 now.
My dream shifter is one with the throw of the z3 1.9 and double the length of the lever.
I can't stand those shorty stubby shifters...I dunno what the craze is about them.... :?:

I am planning on doing the B&M just because I am a dealer. My cost is somewhere around $125, so I am wanting to try one. I am suprised to see the apparent quality, and the advanced engeneering from an american hot rod company.
I like their shift knobs best too. I think they look nicer than almost any other aftermarket brand. I have never thought to see if they are metal or plastic under the leather...

Do you have the numbers for everything? I would like to get the M roadster lever, but I need the selector rod joint and the shifter bushing. I checked the website, and I have bmw part numbers from etk but no one ever lists the parts.Originally posted by Eurospeed88Don't waste your money on big bucks shift kits. Get the Z3 SSK from BMA. For under $70 bucks, you get everything you need.Old and improved:

If I'm looking for the quickest shift, and don't really care about feel, what's my best choice? My guess is I should go with the Z4 3.0, but maybe not? What's the closest feel to a race car shifter? The BMW 318 is back. With a vengeance.Comment

were do you get your information? the bmp one has the brass bolt. and we just installed it on a super eta and it has no play. it expensive but it gives you what you want.Originally posted by Eurospeed88That stuff takes a long time to wear out. If you are really that worried, get the Derlin carrier bushing from UUC, and do the 'bitch clip" mod that Jordan did to his tranny, by replacing the bitch clip at the end of the linkage with a brass bolt. Contact him to find out more about it. The Z3 kit offers nearly the same throw reduction as the UUC kit, and is $150 cheaper. The Bav Auto and BMP kits are garbage.Comment
