Strength of E30 gearboxes

My Getrag 260 ran for two years which was about 20000 miles with less than half a cup of black gear oil. I am not lying, no joke it is still running strong and the only problem is it is whining. I beat the shit out of it cause I have another 260 to swap in when I feel like it. The car sat for a year on an incline and I think that is when it leaked all the fluid out. Then the previous owner drove it for two years. Then I bought it and went to change out the gear oil and all it puked out was a very small amount of black watery leftovers and there was about a cap full of metal on the magnet.

That being what we call the half shafts? or a 4 wheel dirve car front and rear?

That's invalid because of the minimal torque load going through that tranny. I think anyone would have a tough time thrashing that 'box with a stock motor. ;)

Hartge and other companies put the Getrag 260 behind built 3.5L M30's in 3300 pound E28's. :idea:

I drove mine for a whole year without fluid.

Still shifts great.

^ lol. i picked my rx8 up from a dealership and they drained the fluid and forgot to put it back in. i got 50 miles and it blew up. $3500 later. and i couldnt prove it was the dealership because i drove off the lot...... regardless, the transmission already had grind from 4th to 5th above 8000rpm.

i bought a used transmission, 7500 miles. came from a turbo 4 rotor swap rx8. was good for 3 months. started grinding above 8000rpm from 3rd to 4th. which is a lot more annoying than 4th to 5th.

you want a fragile transmission? buy an rx8.

getrag 260s are so well known for being reliable that cadillac uses them in the CTS.

i will say for shifting feel though.. the getrag has a lot of room for improvement. but man are they rock solid. good transmissions to teach people to drive manual on.

260s are teh shizz. i shift mine very hard at times and it has never bitched about it

my car has been track only for the past 10 years, I just rebuilt the 260 this year. for a comparison our spec miata's (3 of them) get a new gear box every year!

big question i have to ask will a 240 bolt up to a m20b20 i found one cheap and im sick of my auto in my daily. i dont care that it wont hold the torque or power when i upgrade when i get to that stage ill worry about it. I just want to know whether it will bolt up or not
