    Heads off

Well i warped my head.. i had been having some heating problems for a while.. then i forgot to put the radiator cap back on.. and yeah..

so i pulled the head off.. had it shaved.. it was apparently 2 thou out  want to get it ported/pollished along with some lighter valves but money forbids.. maybe

does any one know, or can you tell, if this is a stock piston?

    some other pics..

thats a scary sight. hope it all goes back together... :?

painted my valve cover and intake manifold :D

Hmm....I thought 2 thou was alllowable. I thought anything over 4 thou was when it needed to be shaved.

those pistons look stock to me (at least, they look exactly like mine).

lots of people removing their heads eh? make sure you don't lose any of those head bolt washers (you got new headbolts, right!?), I gotta go search in the grass for one now. :(

I noticed the zip-tie T-belt... hope to go you aren't planning on re-using it.

Ha, ive got pictures just like those. Mine are coming soon. 400k miles on stock block.

I did the timing belt the same way, but still double checked it, I even had the white out mark (has less than 15k miles so no replacement). Your not reusing that head gasket are you?

Once your timing belt has been tensioned, then the tension relaxed, you have to get a new one whether it has 40k or 4 miles on it, so sayeth the Bentley.

Finch, are those the old head bolts in the pic with the valve cover? If so, lucky that you're replacing the hex head bolts before one of them broke on you.

haha surprised you guys pic up such fine details.. id hate to think of a world with out zipties..
I am replacing the timing belt, although it only has about 25kms on it.
Yes they are the old head bolts, the new ones are also hex head, but slightlt smaller..

I heard somewhere that the m20 had two differant size timing belts..?
                is this true?

I'd be concerned about this, the hex head bolts aren't supposed to be available anymore.

The older one was superceded with an updated design with a different number of teeth along with the tensioner.

Upon closer inspection they are not hexhead... my bad
Oh, and turns out the head was 4thou out, not 2 like i said earlier..

Old ones on the left, new right.

Much better. Though out of the 3 types of hex head bolts that were used, only one kind was known to fail and even that was rarely. But better safe than sorry.

Is it worth getting port and polish done to m20? or wont notice a thing?
                          mild cam, headers coming soon...

perhaps, if you don't need the car right away and you can afford it now. but if you're pulling the head later to put in a cam (you can't do it with the head in the car AFAIK) you could just wait.

replace those valve stem seals too! I didn't replace mine, they didn't leak before but the degreaser I used to clean the head must have cleaned all the crud out of them and now I get a puff of blue smoke when I start the car. fortunately you can do them with the head on the car, but it's much simpler if you already have it out.
