I was cleaning out the K&N today and noticed that there is a section of ducting that extends from the air flow sensor right to the edge of the box allowing only a thin opening for air to enter the intake ? ..... what the hell is the purpose of this? .... does it need to be there? ... if it was removed it should improve flow a great deal ....no?

Yes, the tube seems to come too close to the edge of the box, limiting ultimate airflow. However, it is a velocity stack and it provides a smooth path to the square opening of the AFM. That is another reason, besides the hot air thing, that cone filters don't do much on these cars. They don't smoothly taper from the round cone shape to the square opening. It's like putting on a bigger throttle body but not port matching the smaller opening in your intake manifold. Kinda pointless. Anyway, if you run the airbox, make sure the cold air part is hooked up and sealed correctly and leave the tube velocity stack thing in there. That's how it works the best.
