Pain the ass isn't it? Try one of those finger ratchets on the hose clamps.

          Step one: Pull engine
          Step two: Replace filter.
Step three: Set chassis on fire.

I replaced mine two weekends ago. It was a bit of a pain in the ass but if you have a second person it makes life so much easier.

              1. I jacked the front of the car and placed two jack stands.
              2. Then I pulled the airbox completely out.
              3. After taking the airbox off this gave me room to to unscrew the clamp around the fuel filter. I tried from the bottom and tried with moving the steering wheel res. but that didn't help whatsoever.
              4. I decided to take the hose off the fuel line, instead of at the bottom of the fuel filter; mostly bc I couldn't get that damn clamp off.
              5. Then I took the fuel like from the T-joint (I have an 86 ETA), this game me the opportunity to change both hoses too. But in the processes I broke my damn T-joint and had to run to Napa to get another one. Whatever you do don't buy the plastic joint, it broke on me like a week later on the highway and had to get my friend bring me a new one.
6.Once unhooked from the T-joint and bottom of the fuel line, you can pull that bad boy out through the top where I removed the airbox.
              7. Once out, take a picture of the POH (piece of history) and replace.

i replaced mine out from the top without really removing anything, took maybe 8-10 min.
just standing in my driveway. its pretty simple after you get the screws loose on the clamps. and yes tightening them takers forever also but i used a ratcheting skrewdriver muahaha

                  Bloody showoff!:D

If I hadn't broken stuff, it probably would have taken me an hour between under the car and above the car. Plus I'm a noobie.
