"Brake Lights" light turns off when pressing brake pedal

My brake lights work fine, but whenever I turn my car on, the "brake lights" light comes on. It turns off as soon as I press the brake pedal. Any ideas on what could be causing this and how I can fix it? Thanks.

it's supposed to do that. It can't test the brake lights until you press the pedal and turn them on.

If i start my car with the pedal depressed, and press the pedal again, the check light keeps flashing and doesn't reset.
If I start my car without my foot on the brake, and then hit the pedal, it resets fine. Is this normal or is it a rearcheck light relay issue?

it could be the brake light switch itself. all the check panel needs to see is a closed circuit, it shouldn't matter if you did it before you start the car or not.
