    code reader

so in order to get the codes off our cars can you use a normal OBD1 or 2 code reader or do you HAVE to use a peake reader(round, set it on the connection in the engine bay)?

A BMW specific OBD1/2 diag system should be able interrogate a Motronic 1.1 or later DME. A generic OBD1 reader probably can't. If the car is a 325i/is or Super ETA the "stomp test" will do everything a code reader will.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

yeah, read up on the stomp test. there's really little point to buying a code reader for an E30.
