    HELP: E36 P/W switch install on E30

I don't know where to put this, so feel free to move it, MOD>

I know there is a write up about this, and I have read it and followed its photos to wire the switches. Somehow it still doesn't work.

Please tell me if I wired this correctly.

    Driver side
    E36 switch wire - E30 wire

    BLue - Purple
    black - black
    Green/Blue - Brown
    Blue/ Green - Green/Grey
    Black/ yellow - Brown

    Passenger side
    BLue - Purple/ Gray
    Black - Black
    Green/Grey - Brown
    Blue/ green - green/grey
    Black/ yellow - Brown

When I connected them, my passenger side rolled up. But both windows won't roll down. Also, i notice one of the wires were starting to heat up so I turned the power off and resorted to asking for help here.

SO hopefully, the sarcastic people would stay away and the knowledgeable ones share their wisdom regarding this matter.

I do not know electrical and I based everything to what I see and the color codes. So please guide me in the right direction.

PS, I have the blue base switches.

I can't remember the link for the write up off the top of my head, but my recommendation is to use quick disconnects for your connections instead of soldering. This way you can mix and match wires until you get the right combination.

I assume you are using small base switches? If that it so, what color bases are they? the large base (early style) only have 4 wires. Also, not sure why, but the base wire harnesses do make a difference. The harnesses for the rears will not work correctly for front switches and vice versa

Well, I know it's late. But it's the only time i have to do it. I thought it would be so easy to follow and so I cut the switches out and installed the bezel.

Now all my windows are shut and my AC is not working. I don't have the switches now. I will need to transport 2 elderly ladies tomorrow in hot weather.

This is how i did mine. Make sure you have the big white base e36 switch and same color e30 wires from your car as mine if you want to follow these steps.

I used 4 color wires to attach the e36 window switch to the e30 window switch plug in my car in case i want to revert anytime. So i didnt solder or taped. Kinda plug and play thing.
I used red, black for -/+ and white, yellow for up and down.

The first pic shows you the functions of tge e36 switches in the lower drawings.

Do you know if your switches are good? I ran into the same problem you are right now by following the exact same write up with blue base switches also.

It ended up being bad switches.

If you know anyone that has known working switches, try theirs, but worse case, bite the bullet and buy a pair from Blunttech for like $30.

I wish i had seen this and didn't have to cut the oem wiring harness. (pulling my hair) thanks for the help. i do however have the blue base switches and i tested both of them and they are both good. just wanted someone to show me the correct wiring. i have 5 wires.

The green/blue wire turns on and off when i press the white arrow button (idk if that's up or down) i'm assuming it's down(?)
The blue/green is constantly on but when i press the white button, it turns off.

This is with the power supply negative is attached to the black wire on the switch. Any suggestions?

Do you have the right brown wires connected to the right wires? When I did this, I did the mistake of cutting all wires off my body harness and not one by one and it does matter which brown wire goes to what wire.

This should go in the E36 W.Switch write up in the DIY section.

Whenever i use the white base switches they just start burning/smoking so im assuming those are the wrong ones?

If your Positive that your switches are good and that you have connected the browns to the correct wires, have you checked your wire connections? Because I was getting a less than stellar contact by just twisting them together and they wanted to work but only would if I held them a specific way.

I am no where near my car so I can't take a look at the moment, but I'll take a look at it tonight.

Also, if they aren't working, did you blow fuse #17? I know I blew it at least once while initially installing this.

yes i did blow a fuse but replaced it. I had the wires connected with wire nuts to test them out and they were tight. It's just I am not sure I am wiring them right.

When I connected both of the switches, it rolled up by itself and would not roll down.
