overheating issues

my e30's temp gauge is constantly tipping past the median and is at 3/4 while in idle. However, car runs cool when i'm driving it.
having to constantly turn off/on the car at long stop lights and drive-thru's gets old fast.
anyone know what the problem may be?

Let it cool down and bleed it again. Same thing happened to me unless it is the clutch fan or even h20 pump.

Im with Greg. Fan clutch would present those symptoms. As would air in the system. Clutch is more likely though

its not the water pump. its lack of air flow.

If it was the water pump it would over heat while moving too. The engine cooling down at speed suggests the radiator isn't getting any airflow.

Well if something is restricting water flow broken impeller etc the fucker will run hot and of course will cool down travelling at highway speeds

No, if the water isn't flowing then the cooled water from the radiator wont be circulated, and the car will overheat while moving as well as at idle.

The waterpump HAS to flow water. If it restricted at all, it doesnt matter if you are sitting still or doing 200mph, its still going to get hot.

OP, if the fan clutch isnt the problem, take your radiator out and either take it to a shop for a thorough cleaning or clean it out yourself. Word of advice when cleaning, always use the dry method first. If there is dirt in the fins of the radiator and its giving it flow problems, adding water will create mud which will make your problem worse. So blow it out first, then when yo can see through most every fin in the core of the radiator, THEN spray it out with the hose.

Could be your thermostat mate
If its a bad thermostat could not be circulating properly creating blockage. Had a problem like that with a customers 528i when at idle it got hot but when moving temp dropped.

This is an air flow problem, not a water flow problem.
