I would go for turbo M20. works well, simple/cheap engine to work on, and makes about the right amount of power for an E30 to be fast but still driveable.

You aren't getting uncontrollable wheelspin at 80mph in a 1.6l civic.
Haha, I guess you haven't seen some of the 600-800hp Civics on honda-tech.com

I've got a bone stock NA M30 B35 in my car, and I can tell you that it's a fun motor. It "feels" fast. It's not a peaky wind the shit out of me to get any performance kinda of motor - it's got grunt - and can spin preaty high too...

I can drive it lugging it around between 2 and 3k all day long, or I can whind it out. - Classic BMW 6... A turbo would be a bit crazy in a e30 - you're taking seriouse HP there. More then anyone "needs" to have fun in a e30 that's the hell for sure.

Comming from a M30 world I'll give you my 2 cents.

Build M20 - great motor - cost some $$$ - don't expect the world out of it, but a fun project - plus you KNOW it bolts in. Take a look at jordan HP and Tq. It's getting close to a m30!

M50/S50 - Not so sure about these swaps - If you can get the motor for cheap it's worth it. I still can't figure out why no one runs a super charger on these motors...Must be the $$$

M30 - Pain in the ass install - lots of little unknowns - Lots of thing you need to find out - Not much info out there about the details. Hard to find a low mileage block for sale. The motors last forever.

              Hope that helps....

                You can't use a 745 manifold on a RHD 335 unfortunatly
