Use a short stick to your ear to locate the noise. Then you will know. Be carefull!
      Adjust the valves?

        Just a question...

Hydraulic valve lifters don't need to be adjusted. Yet, two people have mentioned this. Curious.

Can someone post up that sound file again. I'd like to hear it and compare it to my new 318is and see if we're talking chain / chain tensioner.

        Thanks!

not only that but the hydrolic lifters cannot be adjusted... if it is indeed the lifters they are worn out and need replacing. run a detergent in the oil before your next change, i had a ticking noise on start up, ran the cleaner and it went away. the hydrolic lifters have little pumps i guess you could call them and if they are clogged you will get a ticking noise or if the dome ontop of the lifter is worn you will also get a ticking noise.

PS: the sound file is down.
