R3vlimited at its best here. Why the hell do you only have one single key? I have an extra keyring of 9 keys. 3 extra keys per e30.
Your signature picture has been removed since it contained the Photobucket "upgrade your account" image.

Get all your e30 buddies together and try their keys in your lock. There's a halfway decent chance one will work. My two e30's have similar keys, similar enough that I can use one key for both cars. It's purely by chance, but if the car is sitting somewhere undesireable, it's worth a try.

Other option would be to go to your local e30 guru shop and ask them for their bucket of keys from all their parted out cars. Chances are there's one in there that will work on your car. It's been know to work before.

                Here is another way.

                Go to dealer with title.
Give Parts Guy the VIN #
                Ask for the "key code"
Write down key code in a minimum of 2 places. One being on the back of the title
Memorize where you wrote it the second time.
Take key code to any reputable locksmith shop in your area.
Ask them to make you a key from the code.
Cost me 24 $ locally and $ 8.00 for duplicates of that key once the first one was made.
Pay the extra 8 shabangs and get a spare!

                30 $ total and a lifesaver!
