Can someone tell me what this is for?

I took off this wheel well piece on the rear passenger side of my car since it was pretty much broken, and it reviled this tank and i have absolutely no clue what its for.
    I have an 89 325i cabrio.

I feel kind of stupid asking this, but can someone tell me what this is for?

I don't even own this car anymore, but I'm too lazy to change the picture.

as temp rises causes pressure in the tank this allows it to escape safely, also when filling up if you fill up to much the extra will allow it to get stored in there temporarily instead of coming out the neck or the side of the car

Also, a high point in the car for vapors to condense in, then flow back down into the tank....
There's a 'y' in that plumbing that rusts prematurely, and then opens your
fuel system to air and wheel crud. It's worth looking at that and pulling the cover
off the big line and checking everything. 2 out of 2 of mine had rotted out...
