clicking noise driving me crazy!!! Help!

I have a weird noise coming from somewhere under the dash on the drivers side. It a constant ticking noise that will start at about 2500rpm and increase in frequency all the way up to the red line.

I already took out the gauge cluster thinking that it might be one of the gears of the odometer or rev gauge, but i found nothing wrong with those.

the noise seems to be linked directly to the revs, but it doesn't sound like it's coming directly from the engine.

can anyone help? i would appreciate it...

Is ticking electrical or mechanical? There are very few mechanical things inside the passenger cabin under the dash on the drivers side.

Something could be contacting the steering shaft and it's being transmitted up into the car... I assume you drove the car with the dash out and the sound is present? Will it make the noise with the engine revving and the car out of gear? If so remove the lower panel under the steering column and start touching relays. OR you can use a stethescope to pinpoint the sound.

every now and again i get a clicking that seems to be coming from under the dash or from under the hood close to the fire wall on the drivers side. it is not how ever rpm related. come to find out that it's the cruise control cable/modual. only hapens 2 or 3 times a year but the last time it even did it with the cars ignition on but not running. i poped the hood and when i tugged on the cruise cable the sound changed and it's definitly cable related and in the modual. could this be your problem?

No, it's your tach cable, probably where it comes out of the distributor. Sometimes
that right- angle drive gearbox wears and lets it wobble all over...

How about something (fuel line, etc) touching the firewall and transmitting noise back?
The steering column's a good thought...

turns out the problem is the clutch. i figured this out by driving the car and slightly engaging the clutch when the noise appears. as soon as the clutch is engaged the noise goes away.
i'm installing a full sachs clutch kit next weekend and i hope that will take care of the noise.

don't forget your throwout bearing, that's probably whats making the noise. R&R pilot bearing too. One piece a lot of people forget to do is the clutch arm pivot/anchor pin inside the bell housing. It can be purchased from dealer for a couple bucks and they do wear down over time. They simply push in for installation.

so, with the clutch ped. out, there's no noise? or with peddle depressed, no noise cause as soon as i touch my ped. the sound stops. kind of like it's the cruise switch that turns it off when you hit the clutch or brakes.

Check your cruise control module. It has been known to make clicking noise. Depressing the clutch disengages the cruise control, thus, stops the clicking noise.
