    Silicone ? REALLY !

Removing the covers on the rear taillights to change a bulb - happen to notice that the PO used some clear silicone to secure the tailights to the car. WTF ? ! Ideas on removal ? ? - (other than a hammer and chisel :?)

Silicone should just peel off, sometimes with a bit of coaxing. If it wont then its something more obnoxious.

The silicone is probably there to fix a leak. It could be that the gasket just needs to be replaced, or there could be previous damage that causes the gasket not to seal.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

I have the same exact problem thanks to my PO. No peeling it off easy either, I'll have to try the heat gun trick.:hitler:

Silicone stays soft and pliable and is also quite flammable. If it won't peel its probably something else. Id be REAL careful using a heat gun around paint.

What I recall from my micro/miniature repair schooling in the Navy,
                Silicone- cut and peel
                Epoxy- sand/file
                Urethane- solvents

Using heat will just make the adhesive more pliable. Cold would probably help more to remove silicone. Get some plastic scrapers.

A little heat does help in removing bumper stickers and tape, but once the tape/sticker is off a solvent will most likely be needed to remove residual adhesive on the surface.

Silicone should not be flammable after it has fully cured. The chemicals in it that allow it to flow are flammable.
