    JB weld nuts exhaust nuts?

Ok my bolt out set doesn't grip my copper nuts and they are so corroded. I got them sitting in pb blaster, I was thinking of jb welding larger nuts onto the copper nuts to grip them. They aren't in REAL tight, I just can't get a solid grip on them. I got the top row out, but none of the bottom. They are corroded even worse.

Please don't move this thread. I dont get any answers in the sub topics.

Heat is your friend. PB blaster is great stuff but won't get the most stubborn nuts off on its own. Now that you have them soaked I would try and tap them a bit with a punch and hammer to try and break loose the corrosion (dont try to get it to spin, just give it a few good wacks without hitting the stud). Next step is invest in a propane torch if you haven't already. Heat up one spot on the nut until it glows and QUICKLY get a socket on there and give it a go. If at this point the nut still won't budge I'm guessing its pretty annihilated so my last suggestion would be to get a good pair of vice grips as tight as humanly possible on there and see what happens.

Give this a try...heat one side of the nut with a propane torch until red hot then put a stick candle to the other side of the nut. The wax will melt and penetrate into the thread. Use an 1/2" impact wrench to take out the bolt. Work fast!

If you have enough room then try this little device...

Hmm, well they are so rounded and corroded no socket can grip it. No room to bang on a socket. I have a oxy acet torch setup.

Torch and vicegrips will do the trick. It'll take a while but will save the threads vs more aggressive approaches

vise grips didnt do anything but strip the nut more. I have all new studs and nuts I dont care how the old ones come out!

you can actually use the vice grip to smash the nut. it's copper, it'll break loose after you work it a bit.

That's what I was thinking. Ok well I did a test on two nuts with jb weld. They should be full cure by 9 tonight. Ill check tomorrow morning how well it works. I may got get bigger vise grips tomorrow if it doesn't pan out.

How much of the stud is sticking out past the nut? If you are replacing the studs, why not just grab the stud with vise grips. If they keep slipping, tighten them more. You should just barely be able to squeeze them down if they are tight enough.

If you're trying to get the stud out, take a dremel and cut down the side of the nut. Doesn't have to be all the way through; just enough that you can get a small chisel or screwdriver in there to whack with a hammer and split the nut off. Also, if the jaws on your vice grips are smooth, use a triangle file to cut some notches in the jaws on the end and you might get a little more grip if all else fails.

Or invest in a set of Octo-Helix extrator sockets like this:

We spent 8 hours trying to figure out what to do with my stripped top tranny torque bolt and even JB welded it and waited overnight. That didnt do squat. Bought the extracter socket and that thing was out in 5 minutes. Pretty much its designed to where the more the socket strips the bolt, the further down it holds until eventually the nut pops off. This is all assuming your a meat head like me

5 Minutes > 30 mints of prep, 1 day of waiting, and 10 minutes of careful socketry any day...

^^ I have that set and it doesn't work. It only worked for the first 5. The other five are so corroded that the teeth stripped the copper nut so its round. The next size down doesn't fit. The JB weld didnt work. Im going to try vise grips all afternoon. Ill WIN THIS BITCH!!!

So it was probably I had my first son last week and not focusing, but it all came back to me. I haven't used a torch for work in like 4 years. I collected my thoughts and I heated up the nut until its cherry red. If a metric size didnt fit I'd smack a standard size socket on. MINIMAL effort and they came off. I gotta go back to work but the last three should be off this evening!
