But most of the time if you use a big 1/2" impact you can spin the bolts out in one shot without even using a wrench. You guys need some fucking air tools. And a lift.
Some day :) You're right, the air gun would probably make things easier (along with every other job. gr. garage doesn't have enough power to run a compressor.)
And yes, I am soliciting gay sex to Dan in return for his assistance in finishing Dave's car. :)

:p I have a compressor and power in the shed, but no garage. 2 bad situations. trade you a compressor for a garage? how do you part cars without a compressor? I am amaised! and impressed.

Hand tools and long breakers are your friends ;)
It's a challenge, for sure. We're working on it. Where were you this weekend?
Dan, you probably just would have slowed us down - thanks for finding something else to do ;)

What guy? lol - fuck them, the few times I've blown it was when I used the shop vac AND had the lights on - heaven forbid.
It took me about two hours to do this. Would have been faster, except the nut on the top bolt was slightly messed up and I couldn't get the wrench on it properly.. and didn't realize that was the problem until everything was off.
Top side: standard 17mm wrench.. you can slide it right in to the hold the nut from spinning. Then, with a flex ratchet head (and maybe a U extension), you can get the bolt off. Not too bad. Straight ratchets won't work.
Bottom side: Thought this would be easier, but it's actually also a pita. Luckily, I have an extremely short stubby flex head that I could force in there to hold the nut and used a wrench on the bolt.
Yes.. I replaced it with a fully reman unit from bavauto.. About the only new part on the car :D. I have a working used unit somewhere as backup just in case.

The newer cars have an e-bolt head on the tranny side (reverse torx) so your method above will only work on early cars (like my euro, I did the same thing.) What would work best is a 12 point 10mm wrench - only it'd have to be at least a foot long to get in there. I'm going to look for one so this job doesn't kick my ass EVER AGAIN. :)

The BMW ETK lists hex bolts even for later cars, but who knows. At least it's not as bad as the E36, which from what I hear is even a bigger PITA.
I just put the AT from the '90 into my '87 last night... you better believe I did the starter at that time too.... no way in hell do I want to go through what you went through anytime soon.

So you put that same bitch of a bolt back in there? How new is that starter anyway???
