Proper set up for E30 drain container/hose?

So, I noticed my tail light was leaking onto my battery cover.. when I didn't notice was that the battery try was wet and even worse the puddle UNDER that tray.

I started to pull things out and when I got the tray out I noticed a strange box with a hose. Pulled it out and the water started to drain.. fantastic.

Anyways, is there a proper way to run this set up or does the hose just sit at the bottom:

The container actually had accumulated a fair amount of water in it and I drained that out as well. Luckily the rest wasn't bad, sanded it and sprayed it to prevent further.

    Any advice is great, thanks.

That is the vent container for a trunk mounted battery. There should be a vent hole in the top/side of the battery and a little rubber elbow on it. The small black hose connects to that. The white pastic box has a larger opening/nipple on the underside to allow the battery vapors to vent to the outside. (Battery charge vapors are explosive gas)

Not sure why that vent box was full of water, though. Maybe just because it was submersed.

This makes sense to me.. Yeah it was full of water cause it was entirely underwater when I found it.

I'll make sure to run it properly, thanks for the heads up!

It was terrifying to see a fucking puddle in my car, and under the battery of all thing. There aren't many BMW dealerships around here so ordering the gaskets is a hike for me.

          airkhin just an FYI; http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?...93&hg=63&fg=20

Not sure if the gasket is any different for M3's but the parts number is listed there for you.

The water IN the box might very well be battery acid, so be careful...
