Ok, I found some encouraging info...

My CEL lights were not making sense because the 173 ECU has different codes than a 153 box (from what i'm gathering on the internet). When looking at it from that point-of-view, i'm getting code 1264 which is " EGO Heater".

I assume that means the heater element in the O2 sensor? Is the heater element something that is controlled by the motronic unit itself? I have a brand-spankin'-new O2 sensor in there... so the problem is probably elsewhere (wiring?).

GOT IT!

There is a fuse for the EGO Heater, but in the bentley it is labeled as "fuel system" (GO BENTLEY!)

I didn't even have to reset anything... replaced the fuse and started the car to see if the fuse would pop again... fuse didn't pop and the CEL went away.

i'm not a fan of the Bentley or any manual that throws 10 years of a model into one book. it seems everything i look for isn't covered in the detail i'd like. it's better than nothing but it's not the be-all end-all of manuals.

good job on tracking it down. next time you'll look at the fuses FIRST! when i lost my tach, i started digging in deep and didnt even think to look at the fuse b/c i had just replaced all the fuses. well it was a blown fuse and i felt dumb
