    Engine Degreaser.. the good stuff?

Just picked up an 89 325i with 183k on it, so far can't keep my hands off it. Looks like it has had a slow leak for awhile and its just built up on the bottom end.

So what the good stuff I can get locally, quickly (like pepboys, or advanced, napa.... im in NJ)? I dont care of I need to be careful with it, just want it to work. (Like aircraft paint stripper, but thats a whole different story..)

Thanks for the quick answers hoping to tackle this tomorrow, I use simple green at work and it doesnt seem strong enough imo. I'll give the ZEP stuff a shot, seen that before.

I dont mind wearing a mask gloves and glasses, it just gotta work, theres alot of dirt mixed in it. Thanks for the suggestion.

I've always used Gunk brand engine degreaser. Comes in a spray can with an orange cap. Works good. I suggest using a putty knife to scrape off what you can first though.

Super clean degreaser or purple power should do it.

Super clean in the purple bottle does the trick.

Sounds similar to the ZEP stuff. It makes you feel like your dying if you breathe it in, but it works very very well.

But my rule of thumb, if it says its good for the environment, it isn't going to work worth a crap.

Purple power isn't good for aluminum if you want it shiny.

I use a mix of 50% simple green max (concentrated type) and 50% Oil Eater

THe engine gunk brand I find is only good for light discoloration and minor (or quickly cleaned up oil messes). I've never had luck with that stuff on anything more than just a dusty dirty engine.

Yea Strang3, thats my philosophy too, I prefer the stuff that causes my grass to spontaneously combust.

I like CRC brake clean. engine degreaser is always disappointing.

I've got an oil pan I need cleaned, it's so nasty that neither simple green, purple power, nor brake cleaner would even break the surface. it's from Germany. So much for the Germans taking better care of their cars.. hah!

                              ZEP is good stuff.

I like Oil Eater from Schucks (now OReally?s). Not as aggressive,
