So I double checked the fuel pump relay and the main relay. I'm not 100% sure which is which, but the furthest left is the main relay correct? Anyway that looked like it may have been a little loose. So just to be safe I popped it out and cleaned all the connections. Well the car started up! Woo! Could that have been the source of my problems? Sadly I can't drive it cause I'm waiting on a new thermostat cover. Is there a way to be sure if the relay is faulty or if it was just because the connection was loose?
the relay with 5 prongs is the main relay, the one closest to your headlights/the front of the engine bay. you can check them by placing your finger on the relay while having a helper turn the key to the "ON" position and you should feel a click.

Sweet thanks man. I was looking at that image but in the Bentley it switched the "fuel pump" and the "main" relays.. Hmm. But yeah thats the one that wasn't all the way in :hitler:
Gonna replace all 3 just to be safe though. These things look beyond ancient...

i know they can be switched around, but the general rule of thumb is the 5-prong relay is the main relay

Ok. Well I was talking to Steve about it and he said that he never heard of these problems being caused by a loose connection on the e30, and sure enough this morning it wouldn't start again. So I'm gonna replace the relays and hope that is the source of the problem...

Yeah, I was going to say I don't think that's the issue at hand here. I honestly don't know what it would be without further testing like jlevie suggested
Alright. Well I'm going to swap those out see if it has anything to do with it. I accidentally whacked the main relay pretty good with a wrench while installing the airbox so who knows. Because the problem seems so intermittent it makes more sense to me that its an electrical issue rather than a mechanical one. But most everyone on this forum has more experience than I so who knows.
it might be the main relay. you can bump or knock it accidentally and have it work. and then it cools off, contracts, whatever and it doesnt work again. the main relay is my main go to point when i get intermittent running. replace it anyway. eliminate at least 1 variable. alternatively, you can jump the relay.... for diagnostic only.

did you verify spark?
I replaced both fuel and main relay, no change. And yes, pulled the plugs and they had sparked
