Remove check engine light for smog?

Im in the process of registering my 86 325es and its come to smog. Check engine light is flashing and my mechanic friend said all i have to do is take out the bulb to pass? not sure about this but seeing how the car is over 25 years old it may not be required? and if so how do you remove it? thanks for any help and sorry for the noobieness. just got the car running after sitting since 04 so i am antsy!!

There is no check engine light on 325eS.

Also, your friend is an idiot. Any car that is supposed to have a check engine light will automatically fail if it has been removed or is not functioning.

If the light that is flashing has CHECK on it and is in the center of the cluster above the row of lights along the bottom, it is the Check Panel warning light.

yes it is just the word check. does it matter if it is flashing for smog?

People not familiar with BMW's will often assume the blinking "CHECK" light in the cluster is a check engine light but it's not.

i got it, pushed the check button and it went away.
