    I'm in southern california.

20w-50, no difference whether it's hot (95f) or cold (65f) or on a rare occasion, freakishly cold (45f)

I run 10w40 Havoline all year round and have yet (knock on wood) to see any oil leaks. Power steering......now that's another story ;)

I used 5W30 in my M20 last year, big mistake. Burning/losing 1 L of oil every 2,000 kms. 5W50 Castrol Syntec now, haven't lost a drop in 3,000 kms since oil change.

                Keep it slideways!!

Incredible stuff, no sacrifices. That said, I still switch to 15W-50 Mobil for summer.

I just use plain old 10w40 year round. FYI: I live in the "mild" Northwest state of Washington, so that also has an effect upon my oil type choice.

I listened to a few people on here and I just go to the dealership to buy BMW spec Castrol oil I think its 15-50 but my car ran a lot better and stoped leaking, Local shop told me to use 5-20 when I got the car and it leaked like a bitch and ran like crap. Good thing I got a second opinion from people on the forum.

well that stuff is so thin you were probably getting a lot of blow by. BMWs just need heavier weight oil.... I dont know what the guy from your shop was smoking.

I run the same oil in my 2.8l

Do you have any problems burning it off? I used to think it was bad valve stem seals letting it in but now that I have a brand new head/guides/seals its definately rings. Total seal rings do a less then stellar job with thier oil scrapping job, but my compression is all 200-210.

I think I'm going to switch to 20w-50 this weekend and see if that halts the problem. I've never had an issue burning oil until I swtich to the 5w-50 Syntec.
