    Rebuilding entire engine

Ok so... Good news :) I have a 117k mile engine available to me WITH a hood (which I need) for cheap. It is going to be delivered to my work. All I gotta do is call the guy and let him know a good time to bring it there. My question... I had another thread about rebuilding the head and I came to the conclusion it would cost around $1000 to rebuild an m20b25 head. I want to rebuild my entire engine since it will be out of the car. How much does it cost to rebuild the ENTIRE thing? I mean, I figure getting new seals in the bottom and oil pump and stuff plus bearings and rings and all that. Plus machining of the crank to balance it and what not. I figure maybe another $1000 for the block? So I'm guessing $2500-$3000 will be enough to rebuild the engine. What do you think?

I think, if you have a ~100k M20 that runs fine available, why bother?

You are strange Will. First you don't have the money to fix your car, then you want to buy a cheap E21... now you want to drop $2,500-3,000 on an engine rebuilt? :)

I honestly don't see the point.

My M20B25 came from a 1991 4-Door automatic with 118K miles on it, and all I did was replace all the seals, headgasket, all other gaskets, and tossed it in.

Perfect 165PSI Across the board, and it runs VERY well.

I would not bother messing with a motor with that low of milage, the cylinder condition on mine was PERFECT, no imperfections at all..

Plus, even on the visual side you can make an old motor look pretty damn good before you install it.

I took this (without rebuilding it mind you)

            to this

              tough to argue with that.

for money/results kind of comparison anyway

In Arthurian times they would say you were a sorcerer James! Nice work!

Will change the seals, put in the motor drive the car. (assuming it is a good low mile engine)

I was thinkin about it today at work and decided to just do what James did. Replace all the seals/gaskets and put it in. Headgasket, cam seals, crank seals, timing belt/water pump, rubber hoses, clutch, shifter bushings, flexdisc, oil pump and pickup, etc. I'm calling the guy today to arrange delivery. And for now, my brother is paying for the engine and I will end up paying him back sometime. :) Good thing my brother and I get along real well eh?

His car was a POS to start with, yours was not. And you didn't go buy a less reliable lump to repalce it.

Good score on that engine and hood.

haha. Im gonna get a LOT of stuff for the car. I'm gonna replace all the gaskets and seals and what not on the engine while its out of the car and paint it up all pretty. Also, new clutch, all new shifter bushings, motor mounts/tranny mounts, flexdisc, etc. I already mentioned all of it so... I wont do it again lol
