    Everyone should buy a chip!

Just installed my JC chip, what a difference!
The throttle respsonse is amazing, mid power is greatly increased, my rough idle is now perfect. Couldnt be happier. ALso threw my new subs in and they rock also.
Its a good day, and if your thinking about getting a chip, i highly reccomend it. Also, it is a very easy install, only bout 45minutes.

I was considering a MarkD chip but it seems a few peeps are having problems getting them delivered.

Do they make a chip that is made specifically for an M20 with 19lb injectors using a stock AFM?

i would assume the chip would work fine no matter what you have done to your motor. All it does is re-map the fuel injection, timing, gives you a 6900rpm rev limiter, and it must be used with 91 or greater octane gas. I strongly suggest you invest. Best investment for out motors IMO. Without doing a motor swap. Actually, i assume a cam would be a great investment to. But today was th ebest day of driving in my life. Throttle response was excellent. I didnt want to stop driving.

When you order your chip you will need to let him know what you've done...

Who makes chips for the M42??? Anyone here using one??
The M42's require 91 octane stock so I figure a Chip wont require anything more then the $$ for purchase

Im pretty sure the manual recommends you use 91 on all motors.
I was using premium before i bought the chip, so its only an extra 7 bucks per fill for a lott more fun. The car seems a lot healthier to.

nope, what it says is to use unleaded fuel only.. no reason to use 91 octane on a stock M20 with 8.8:1 compression, or a low revving eta.

on an eta, yes. But i use 89 or 91 in all my cars/skidoos/dirtbikes/etc. Just better gas.
But yes, you are right. I just looked through the manual then. The car definately would rahter have 91 octane in it tho:)

Now that is entirely dependant on driving style and climate.

Here in TX its hot. Kristin has to run 91 or 93 or here bone stock m20b25 pings.

EVERYTHING here in Texas pings on 87. All day long I listen to otherwise boring plain stock cars, new and old, of all makes and models.. drive by at part throttle, pinging so loudly/freqently on every cylinder it completely drowns out any exhaust note.

Try installing a JimC chip on an eta. The difference is mind-blowing. :D

As far as octane ratings go, my wife's 325i will run like SHIT on anything less than at least 89 (plus). On regular, it runs like shit and pings a lot. The elevation here has a lot of adverse side effects. When Jordan would come up here in the E36 M3, I swear it would loose like 20-30hp, it felt like there was 5 more people in the car.

flame if you want, but i just got a chip off of ebay for 30 dollars. the difference in performance is incredible, esp. in the upper rpms. might not be as good as a JC chip, but at least it wanst $250.

as for octane, my car runs ruff on anything that isnt 93.

So what exactly is involved in programming chips? Special equipment? Software? How are they tested and so forth?

A 486 IBM Compatible computer with an EPROM serial programmer, DOS, and a floppy containing the program you need to read/write your program to the chip.

I have a good friend that programs all kinds of EPROMs to hack different kinds of electronics. He owns an electronic repair shop close by and has the equipment to copy most any type of chip. Of course he doesn't know jack shit about cars so programming custom chips is outta the question.. BUT if anyone wanted to copy a chip I'm sure he could do it.
