Starting problem

Hey guys,

I have a 89 325ix and I have been starting issues for the past few months. At first I thought it was a battery so I replaced it but problems still continued a few days later. Lights would dim which led me to the alternator. After replacing it, I still have NO crank. I did a quick physical inspection and found this. I believe its the "fusible link" it was not connected to anything on the battery end and had a fuse on the other.



Would this cause a NO crank? Also, how does one go about replacing this??

Looks like some kind of aftermarket wiring someone put in for something.

Whats currently happening when you try to start it?

Nothing. No crank at all.

Tried charging the battery and jump starting it, still no crank. When I jumped it, the lights would come on then die out after trying to start it.

That wire is not stock leave it out. Check battery and ground connections and cables if your battery tests good

This an auto or manual? Do the rest of the electronics work? (lights, radio, ect)

If manual have you tried pop starting it?

There is a diagnostic plug on top of the motor. You can jump start the starter by jumping two wires. Google search M20 diagnostic plug and you will see a electrical pinout and diagram.

Or you can jump the starter directly to see if the starter has failed or not. You might just have a bad starter.

Also, very important, check the condition of the engine ground cable from the oil pain the frame rail on the drivers side. This is the ground cable for all engine electronics including the starter. If this cable is dirty, corroded, oxidized and in overall bad condition or loose, it will cause all kinds of problems including no start.

Also try starting in neutral, sometimes the neutral safety switch could go bad
