    Sticky Crap in windshield gasket?

I pulled my windshield to get rid of some rusty spots and had to peel back some of the sticky black tar like stuff that is covered in a thin plastic.
I know that I need to replace it, but cannot figure out what it is called or where to get it. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Yeah it's butyl, but buy it from the autobody supply place, for windshields.

It works better, and will last longer... maybe...

You're better off using liquid urethane. get it at any glass shop. that's all they had back in those days. They have superior products now. let it dry before putting the gasket back in..I'm about to take my glass out because I have a hole below the right windshield corner. so we'll see what's cooking there.

Our windshields were installed without any sealer so while rust could cause the need for something, if you are repairing it and using a fresh seal, you really shouldnt need any kind of sealer.

The later cars DID use some butyl tape from the factory...
