So I went to the hardware store to have a couple extra keys made for my 91 318is the guy said he couldn't cause there is a chip(to make car start)in it. Is this true? I researched and it seems like there isn't a chip. I think the guy didnt know his stuff but I could be wrong. Thanks guys

no chip in the key. the OEM BMW keys are steel and most places cant cut OEM key blanks.FS NY: two Audiobahn A235HC amps and audiobahn 1farad capacitor

My one key has the light in the plastic head which, of course, I restored with a new Varta battery and bulb (that I got from VW for under $3).
The challenge is getting a steel blank and I hate having only one key. My dealer takes extremely good care of me but the only part I ever ordered then rejected was a blank for $30. I cant say if it was just the stubby blank for the plastic head but where are you guys buying steel blanks and who cut them ?Seat Shocks....I have passed the baton to John Christy from Ninestitch. My memory could be faulty, but that is what I remember paying for a plain master key cut by BMW. The key with the light is more.The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Ya I think another key guy is in place. I've always liked ace hardware cause they used the old school key cutter, but ya ill try and find someone who can cut steel keys. I can't stand having one key lol thanks for all the replies as wellComment
