    Cone filter swap

Ive migrated to these e30 forums because the guya on bimmerforums are kinda snobby dicks. Some of them.
Anyways. Im blessed to have an 87 325i with the m20 for mt first car. 5 speed, odo stopped at 166040 (common problem ive learned)
Changed my fuel filter two weeks ago and gained alot of throttle response and seemd to gain a few hp. The filter had NEVER beem changed. My car was running on a red and brown...ooze... is the best way to describe it. Prior to this the poor thing sat in a garage untouched for four long years!
Ive got her running good now with a new dealership installed water pump and timing belt, new kyb struts and oem rear shocks. Cut my cats out yesterday, and took out my intake baffle as well. I really only want to do one more thing, and thats convert to a cone filter, for the sound, conveinence, and save in price over paper filters in the long run. Espescially if its a dry aem filter.
I know i need an adapter for my afm to get any tubing or cone on it, (which if any of u have, the afm bracket too preferabbly i need one. 50$?)
Sorry for the paragraph its just backround for anyone whos going to give me advice. May save them some typing in maitence tips.
Sincere thanks to anyone who reads my blah blah blah and helps.

Just use the stock one. The cost difference is like $2/year. Cheesy aftermarket ones let more dust and contamination into your engine which wears it out faster, and in basically all cases they have less breathable surface area than the stock panel filter (and they supposedly flow the same because the filter material has much bigger "holes" in it).

Seriously, cone filters are a waste. You won't get any benefit, and if anything you wear the engine faster and in all likelihood lose some power. Unless you are solely after the sound, in which case knock yourself out.

Adapter can be had on eBay for $10. K&N cone filter is $40. Make a bracket out of scrap metal, and a heatshield like this:

And you have yourself a cheap, functional cone filter. If you properly maintain the filter, it isn't going to make too much difference on engine life, but be aware the risk is there.

I love that if you said you wanted to slam your car, ruin the handling, and end up ruining the chassis by banging it off of everything you drive over, there would have been seventeen pictures with other people bragging about their 'low' and smashed oil pans.
Mention you want to add a cone filter, which will have a negligible effect on your car, good or bad, and someone objects.

        Welcome to r3v.

Kamotors, a member on here, makes a pretty well sorted out cold air intake for not too much money.

Nah, don't bother. Just stick with the stock Mahle paper filters. They have plenty of surface area. Look into doing the M30 "Big Six" AFM swap if you are interested in a slightly involved bolt-on to help things breathe a little better.

If we are talking about actual decent CAI setups with proper heat shields and such, it's a little different. Still no extra power, but at least you get the fun CAI sound without hurting performance by sucking hot air in.

Stock are designed to provide better pressure and flow then any cone filter. Stay with your stock Air box and filter.

Thats all i needed to hear guys. Thanks. Ill look into higher quality stock replacements and such through fram or stp or whomever.
I saw on this forum removing the baffle actually HURTS performance which made me D:
                That true?

If your talking about the square snorkle, put it back in. It helps create velocity.

I did back to back dynos. In addition to not flowing more, the filtering of the stock filter is far superior.

I figured since the air actually had to go all the way back to the front of the box that bafflw thingy actually hurt flow. But i guess since its not coming directly into the amf port, itll create a little pressure and suck more air in.

It reduces turbulence. It doesn't do any good to remove it.

If it had stock fuel filter and letting crap flow you might as well get your injectors cleaned and rebuilt. Forum member does it for around 60 or you could do it the poor mans way
