    Speedometer adjustment?

So my speedometer is clearly off in my car, and I've had to judge my speed based off of my RPM and what gear I'm in, for example in 5th at 3,000 RPM I'm doing (give or take) 70 MPH. But my speedo indicates 95.

Also my MPG gauge doesn't work properly, when I let off the gas it shoots up to 40 mpg's and when I barely touch the gas it goes straight to 0, my odometer gears are out as well, would that have anything to do with it?

You sure you don't have the 4 cylinder module in your cluster instead of the 6 cylinder?

I'm honestly not sure, how could I tell? The cluster I have is a motometer and the redline is at 6500 rpm, whats the difference between the M42 and the M20 gauge clusters?

And thankfully my buddy is parting out a sedan that is the same year and has an M20 and 5 speed just like mine, and he still has a cluster, but I'd like to try and see if it's possible to fix this one before buying another cluster.

P/N is stamped on it. Compare it to bmwfans or realoem.

will do thanks for the help, probably just end up throwing in the other cluster in hopes that it all works, and gargastic makes gears for the odometer rebuild kid right?

Yeah but the Motometer gears cost like 4x the VDO gears.

fuggg, hopefully the other gauge cluster is a VDO...

can I put a VDO cluster in to replace a motometer?

the coding plug controls the tach and econogauge, it has absolutely nothing to do with the speedometer.

The trigger wheel in the diff is the same size for everything too. So doesn't matter the ratio used, it's always the same. Assuming something weird isn't going on, what sized tyres are you running?
Just a little project im working on

the only thing that makes sense is the needle on his speedometer has been moved, or he's running extreme ultrastance stretched tires that are like 2" diameter less than stock. lol

You have to make sure your speedo needle is adjusted to its correct 0 MPG location. With the front half of the cover off, the speedo needle should point to a small white dot. This indicator is used to place the original needle onto the motor. It can easily be bumped out of alignment if your cluster has been opened or modified.

The needle is lined up to the white dot, thats why I am just so confused...

Some people consider 195/60/14 stock size and I have seen many with this size when it is suppose to be 195/65/14. Po mounted 195/60/14 on my basket weave and when my speedometer showed 80mph, I'm actually doing ~72mph.
