How are the green inspection lights supposed to work after reset?

Memory is failing me right now.

I pulled the cluster the other day to replace the circuit board, and noticed none of my green/yellow/red LED lights are on. The 5 green lights come on, when i turn the key into the 'ON' position, but when the car is started nothing comes on.

Do the gradually start lighting up from left to right, over time? I even performed a reset by jumping the wires, but forget if all the lights were supposed to be off after resetting. You would think after owning 3 E30's I'd remember how it works...

Also one last thing, are the yellow and red lights supposed to come on, when you put the key into the 'ON' position? Only the green ones do in my case.

When reset, the 5 LED's will light up green. As mileage counts, the green LED's will sequentially drop to 4, 3, 2, 1, then yellow, then red.

After starting the car, the LED's should go out in a few seconds.

hmmm i'm stumped now. When I put the car into the 'ON' position, the green lights light up (which I thought indicated everything was functional).....does this mean the SI board needs replacement if the 5 green lights do not function after reset? None of those lights are on, when i start the car.

When the key is in the "On" position, the green led should be on. The number of green led is dependent on the mileage since reset...no green after 7500 miles (yellow is on for oil interval, red is on for major PM). When the car starts, all green led should turn off after a few seconds.

Just to clarify, so after I reset & have the engine running, no green LED's should be on until I start logging in mileage? Greg above mentioned the opposite, so i'm kind of confused. Thanks for everyones comments btw.

btw I swapped SI boards & also circuit boards w/ a known good one last night, and the same thing happened. 5 lights would come on, with it in the 'ON' position, and nothing lit when the car was started.

Ok, here we go again. The green light should go off after the car started. Let's say you have driven 1500 miles, the next time you turn the key to "On", only 4 green led should light up. Green led should go off after the car starts. Then after 3000 miles, only 3 green led should light up and so on...

then as you get closer to "oh shit, time to change the oilzz!", the 2 yellows and 1 red will count down while the car is running. you will eventually be left with just the red light on all the time.

What you describe sounds like what mine did after I reset it. When I got the car, the LEDs were on full yellow and then moved into red. I don't think the PO knew how to reset or even cared. Anyhow, thanks, because I was worried I had messed it up using the jumper wire reset technique. The car has enough problems without electronic issues, too.
