Looks like M40s before March '88 used a 2 pump system, after Mar '88 they used a single high pressure pump like the late model US M20B25.

The fuel pump in your car is different from the one found in cars with the m20b25. I spent $400 to find out.

It is a different pump, but I know an m20 will run with a stock 91 318is pump setup.

Here it is...single high pressure pump.

TREperformance sells high pressure 255 LPH fuel pumps for all BMW vehicles including the 318i, 318ic, 318is and 318ti. These performance pumps will fit any BMW 318 and flow 255LPH and support 500hp.

I've been running the TRE pump for 3 yrs. Works well, they are a good company.

The single in-tank high pressure pump for a late production 318is is not the same as the pump for a 325is/i/ic built from 9/87 on.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
