    the stalk?

No the stearing wheels comes off. then u open the 4 bolts (2up,2below) for the coloum. u should see the screw that holds the stalk in place.

      Define pita.

Remove steering wheel (if airbag car you are supposed to disarm the airbag) which in it's self is a long major pita process.

      Remove knee bolster.

Remove big hard to reach screws behind dash (x2)

      Remove steering wheel covers (pita)

Remove two screws holding cc switch, detach connector, un-snake connecter & wires from the rest of the wires. (no fun)

This is from memory when I replaced mine when the cc was not working, I am sure I am forgetting something.

Just the airbag process exceeds my pita threshold, I had switched to an Mtech1 wheel when I did this so that was done in my case. The rest by far exceeds pita status imho especially if you are only doing it to remove the switch. I say leave it there.

The wiring is soldered into the stalk.

there's a plug though, no need to remove the wires.
