None, because they are a complete waste of time, energy, and money.
WHAT??? I don't get it. It says you can get up to 30 HP from them or whatever, even half that would be welcome... So what can one do to enhance the stock air intake box? Should I simply just buy a replacement K&N air filter and be done or is there anything else?
That is the harsh reality. K&N drop in filter in the stock airbox is all you want to do. Does not look as cool as a CAI, but our dyno tests for our E30 race car (stock engine required) showed no improvement with a CAI. A discussion with Steve Dinan at a local tech session confirmed this.

They do nothing for an e30. I have a K&N cone simply because it sounds better. You can also drill holes in your airbox for the same effect.
Edit: Its nice to see your here Lance, you probably don't know me but I was at last summers picnic and I post occasionaly on BMW Puget Sound.
Drilled the stock box and have a OEM filter. I rule.
That is awesome!!! BMW is ze bomb and I don't have to spend any money, other than a K&N replacement air filter and drills holes in the stock box???? Great! Thanks guys.
One last question, about how big of a hole and how many?
Just get the bottom part of the airbox, of what stays below the filter. On the side closest to the fender, drill enough holes (as big as possible) to the point you can literally say you cut off the entire side of the airbox.

As stated, the stock airbox does a pretty damn good job. Sometimes the short rubber boot thingy between the front of the airbox and the opening of the plastic backing panel for the driver's side headlights can work itself loose and this allows more hot (less dense) air surrounding the engine to enter the intake. Either a clamp or some kind of adhesive can help keep these from working loose......don't know if its an issue with many, happens on my car periodically though.
